Event Description:
Take an adventure-packed field trip to the “Land of the Trembling Earth,” also known as the Okefenokee Swamp and the Florida Caverns. Led by John Manion, Kaul Wildflower Garden Curator with the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, and Chip Campbell, owner of Okefenokee Adventures, participants will visit the trails of the Florida Caverns State Park to study its unique geology and flora. The next day, you'll head out to Okefenokee Swamp to take a motorized water tour to explore the animals, plants, and cultural history of the area. Afternoon visits include a drive to the Chesser Homestead, built in 1927, and a hike to the Owl’s Roost Observation Tower for amazing views. Sunday will feature a canoe and kayak tour of the swamp. Sponsored by the Friends of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, this field trip is part of the Friends’ Certificate in Native Plant Studies (CNPS) curriculum, but all are welcome.
